On October 14, 2019, the first Libra Council meeting took place in Geneva and Council members elected Xapo CEO, Wences Casares, as one of its first 5 board members. Wences brings expert knowledge of digital payments and cryptocurrency and a shared mission to enable people around the globe to send, receive, and store value.
As an entrepreneur specializing in global businesses and financial services technology, Wences has sold multiple companies for a combined total of more than $1 billion. Some of his ventures include founding Argentina’s first ISP, Latin America’s first premier online retail broker, Patagon, and mobile payments companies such as Bling Nation and Lemon Wallet. Most recently, he is the co-founder and CEO of Xapo, a leading digital banking alternative with millions of users around the world. Growing up in Argentina, he experienced how the lack of access to a safe way to send, receive and store money ruined his family’s savings several times. Through Xapo, he has dedicated his career to fixing that problem. The company is fully distributed, with more than 250 employees in more than 50 countries. Similar to Wences, many Xapo team members have first-hand experience of financial instability due to influences such as government inflation, providing Xapo with a unique perspective and empathy for issues that millions of people experience every day.
As a board member of the Libra Association, he will be able to support their efforts and help them build a modern, low-friction, high-security payment network with a solid governance framework.
